The “TikTok couldn't load video” message usually points to a problem on your side: an unstable network or VPN, a bloated cache, low storage or an outdated app version. Less often it's a TikTok outage, the file format or an account restriction. In most cases, switching networks, clearing the cache and updating the app fixes it.
TikTok couldn't load video: what the error means
The same message shows up in two situations, and the fixes differ:
- When watching — the feed won't load, a video hangs on a black screen or the app asks you to “Tap to retry”. It's almost always the network, the cache or the video itself (deleted, private, age- or region-restricted).
- When posting — the progress bar stalls or you see “Couldn't post”. Here file format, size, storage and account restrictions come into play too.
First check whether others have the problem: if people on social media and outage trackers are reporting TikTok issues en masse, just wait.
Why TikTok says “No internet connection” when you're online
- VPN or proxy. VPN servers are often overloaded or caught by TikTok's filters. Turn the VPN off and restart the app.
- Mobile data blocked. On iPhone: Settings → TikTok → Mobile Data. On Android: Apps → TikTok → Mobile data, and remove any background data restriction.
- Data and battery saver. Saver modes cut network access for background tasks — turn them off while uploading.
- Wrong date and time. They break secure connections. Turn on automatic date and time.
- Weak Wi-Fi. Switch to mobile data or vice versa, restart the router, toggle airplane mode on and off.
TikTok not showing videos: step-by-step fix
- Fully close TikTok (swipe it out of recent apps) and reopen it.
- Clear the cache: Profile → ≡ → Settings and privacy → Free up space → Cache → Clear. Your account and published videos are unaffected.
- Update TikTok in the App Store or Google Play — old versions lose compatibility with the servers.
- Free up storage: when the phone is almost full, videos can't buffer.
- Restart your phone. If that fails, reinstall the app — but save your drafts to the gallery first.
- Try tiktok.com in a browser: if it works there, the problem is the app or the phone.
If only one specific video won't open while others play, the creator most likely deleted it, made it private or TikTok restricted it.
Can't post a video on TikTok: format, size, storage
- Format. MP4 (H.264) or MOV is the safest bet, vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920. Re-export unusual codecs or files from some editors to MP4.
- Size and length. The in-app file limit is much lower than on desktop (according to guides, around 287 MB versus several gigabytes on the web), and in-app videos can be up to 10 minutes. Upload large or long files through TikTok Studio on a computer.
- Storage. The app processes the video before posting and needs spare room — at least a few gigabytes.
- Background. Don't minimize TikTok or lock the screen during upload.
- Drafts. If the upload fails, the video usually stays in drafts — open it and retry on a stable connection.
How to upload without losing quality is covered in why TikTok ruins video quality.
Account restrictions and TikTok outages
- Temporary posting ban. After Community Guidelines violations, TikTok can temporarily block uploads or comments. The reason and duration appear in notifications and in your account status section.
- Music and copyright. Business accounts only get the commercial sound library, and a video with someone else's track may lose its audio or fail review.
- Video under review. It uploaded but only you can see it — this usually takes from a few minutes to a few hours.
- Outages. During a global outage, wait it out; if the error persists for more than a day and only for you, contact support via Report a problem in settings.
Never enter your login and password in apps that promise to “fix TikTok” or “remove a ban” — it's a way to steal your account.
The video uploaded but has 0 views: what next?
Sometimes everything worked technically but the counter is stuck at zero. Causes and checks are covered in why 0 views on TikTok: moderation review, privacy settings, a weak start. If the status is fine but the algorithm lacks early signals, creators can add starting TikTok views — from $0.14 per 1000, no password, just the video link. TikTok's rules prohibit artificial activity, so order moderately: the video still has to hold real viewers, and nobody can guarantee recommendations. If reach dropped across all videos at once, check your account for a shadowban.
