A TikTok streak is the flame badge in your DMs: it appears when you message the same person three days in a row, and the number next to it shows how many days the streak has lasted. If a day passes without messages, the flame turns grey, and then it disappears. A lost streak can sometimes be brought back with the Restore button within about 48 hours.
What is the flame on TikTok and where did it come from?
TikTok started testing DM streaks in 2024 — the idea mirrors Snapchat's streaks. The feature now works in both one-to-one and group chats. The flame does nothing for your profile and isn't visible to anyone else: it's a playful counter for two people that nudges them to message each other every day.
In 2025–2026 streaks became a trend of their own: teenagers compete over streak length, share screenshots of “100+” and ask friends to “keep the streak alive” when they go offline.
How a streak starts and what the number means
- Start: exchange messages with one person for 3 consecutive days — a flame with a number appears in the chat.
- Counter: each extra day of chatting adds +1. There's no maximum.
- What counts: according to guides, any messages — text, stickers, shared videos. It's most reliable when both people write.
- Notifications: TikTok warns you when a streak is about to end. You can switch these alerts off in notification settings.
Direct messages on TikTok are only available from age 16, so younger users won't see streaks at all.
How to keep your TikTok streak
- Send at least one message every day and make sure the other person replies.
- Agree on a fixed time, such as every evening, so you don't forget.
- Keep streak notifications on — they'll warn you about a grey flame.
- Check that your message was actually sent: on a weak connection it can get stuck.
- Keep the app updated: streaks and restores only work in recent versions.
Why did my TikTok streak disappear?
- A missed day. The most common reason: one day without messages turns the flame grey, another and the streak is gone.
- Only one person wrote. If the other person didn't reply, the day may not count.
- Blocking or deletion. If someone blocked the other, deleted their account or restricted messages in privacy settings, the streak ends.
- A glitch. Users sometimes report vanished streaks after updates. Restart the app, clear the cache and check again.
- Not available. Streaks roll out gradually and can vary by region and app version.
How to restore a TikTok streak
- Open the chat where the streak ended.
- Tap Restore on the streak-ended notice and confirm.
- The counter returns to its previous number of days.
Limits: the button is available for roughly 48 hours after the streak ends, the number of restores per month is capped, and not every account has the feature. If there's no button, you'll have to start over. Restoring is always free: people selling “streak restore codes” are scammers. Never share your password or SMS codes with anyone.
Streak Pets and streaks: what's new and do they help creators?
Streaks now come with Streak Pets — a virtual pet in the chat. Invite a friend with the pet sticker, chat for 3 days in a row and the pet hatches from its egg. Daily chatting earns points for it to grow, and if the streak breaks, the pet “freezes” until you message again.
Streaks themselves don't boost views. But DMs are a big part of engagement: when viewers send your video to friends, it's one of the strongest signals for recommendations (more in how the TikTok algorithm works). Creators should make videos people want to send to a friend and say so in the caption; shares and reposts are covered in how to repost on TikTok.
If you're just launching an account and an empty profile puts new viewers off, you can add a starting audience with TikTok followers from ads — $6 per 1000, no password. TikTok's rules prohibit artificial activity, so keep volumes moderate and bet on content.
