Instagram says “This story is unavailable” when the Story has expired or been deleted, the account went private, the author shared it only with Close Friends, hid it from you or blocked you. Less often the cause is an age or region restriction, music that isn't licensed in your country, or an app glitch. For glitches, refreshing the feed, restarting the app and clearing the cache usually help.
Why Instagram says “This story is unavailable”
- 24 hours have passed. The Story moved to the author's archive while the app still showed the old ring. Now it's only visible in Highlights, if the author added it there.
- The Story was deleted by the author or by Instagram itself (for breaking the rules or copyright).
- The account went private. If you don't follow it or your request wasn't approved, Stories won't open.
- Close Friends. Stories with a green ring are only visible to people on that list. If you were removed, access is gone.
- The Story is hidden from you. Authors can hide Stories from specific people without blocking them, and there's no notification.
- You were blocked or the account was deactivated — then the profile usually won't open either.
Why Instagram isn't showing your friends' Stories
If a friend's ring is missing from the Stories bar but you can access their account, check:
- Whether you muted them. Open their profile → Following → Mute and turn off the Stories toggle. Muted Stories move to the end of the bar and don't autoplay.
- Whether your friend hid Stories from you or only posts for Close Friends.
- Your connection. On a weak network the Stories bar doesn't refresh.
- An Instagram outage. If Stories won't load for everyone at once, it's a server-side problem.
Note that you can't remove yourself from the viewer list — we covered which anonymous viewing methods actually work in how to view Instagram Stories anonymously.
Why your followers can't see your Stories
Sometimes it's the other way round: people tell you your Story is unavailable. Check Settings and activity → Hide story and live (make sure nobody is there by mistake), whether you posted for Close Friends, and whether the Story uses a track that isn't available in the viewer's country.
If everything works technically but few people watch, it's a reach issue: we covered what boosts completion in how to run Instagram Stories. For creators and business accounts that don't want announcements and promos to look empty, there are Instagram Stories views — from $0.15 per 1,000, no password, just your username. Instagram's rules prohibit artificial activity, so treat this as a moderate starting push, not a substitute for interesting content.
Age, region and music restrictions
- Age. Some accounts (alcohol brands, for example) restrict access by age, and teen accounts see less sensitive content. In these cases Instagram silently shows the same “unavailable” message.
- Region. Content can be restricted in specific countries due to local laws or an advertiser's targeting.
- Music. Instagram licenses tracks country by country. If the song in a Story isn't available in your region, the Story may not play or may show a note that the track is unavailable. Behavior varies by app version.
Don't change your date of birth to get around these limits: it breaks the rules and can trigger an account check.
What to do when Instagram won't show Stories
- Pull down on the feed to refresh Stories — the app often shows already-deleted Stories from its cache.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and turn off your VPN.
- Force-close Instagram, reopen it and update to the latest version.
- On Android, clear the cache: phone Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear cache. On iPhone, reinstalling helps.
- Log out and log back in.
- Open the profile on the web or ask a friend to check: if the Story opens for them but not for you, the restriction is most likely about you.
If the author hid their Stories or blocked you, there's no technical fix — that's their choice. Never enter your login and password on sites that promise to show hidden Stories: that's how accounts most often get stolen.
