You can't fully block Russian content on YouTube with a single switch: there's no filter by language or channel country in the settings. What works is a combination: "Don't recommend channel" on Russian videos, Ukrainian language and location in settings, clearing your watch history, and for kids, YouTube Kids with blocked channels or "approved content only" mode. Here's where to tap.
How to block Russian content on YouTube: what's actually possible
YouTube picks videos based on your watch and search history, subscriptions and feedback. You can't ban "everything in Russian", but you can train recommendations so such videos rarely appear. One catch: YouTube shows translated titles and auto-dubbed audio, so a Russian video may sometimes look Ukrainian. Check the channel name and the audio track (gear icon → "Audio track"); more in our article on YouTube auto-dubbing.
"Don't recommend channel": turning off Russian content in your feed
- On Home, in suggested videos or in Shorts, tap the three dots next to a video.
- Choose "Don't recommend channel" — that channel's videos stop appearing in recommendations.
- For a single video, use "Not interested" → "Tell us why" → "I don't like the video".
- Unsubscribe from Russian channels: subscriptions are a strong signal for the algorithm.
Users report that such channels may still show up in search. To undo all of this feedback, go to Google My Activity → "Other activity" → "YouTube 'Not interested' feedback". The feedback is stored in your account, so it applies on phone, computer and TV.
Language, location and history: how to reset YouTube recommendations
- Interface language: on desktop, avatar → "Language" → "Українська"; in the app, Settings → General, or your phone's system language.
- Location: avatar → "Location" (in the app, General → Location) → Ukraine. This affects popular and trending content but doesn't filter by language.
- History: You → History — remove Russian videos one by one or clear everything. Delete old search queries too.
YouTube has no dedicated "reset recommendations" button: according to YouTube Help, you can start fresh by deleting your watch and search history. If you turn history off entirely, Home stops showing recommendations. After clearing, watch a few Ukrainian videos on topics you like all the way through — the algorithm will rebuild your feed faster. How it works is explained in how the YouTube algorithm works.
Can you block Russian content in YouTube Kids?
Yes, and you have more control here. YouTube Kids has been available in Ukraine since 2019.
- A separate child profile with a content level: Preschool, Younger, Older or "Approve content yourself". The last mode is the only way to fully exclude random channels. In the others you can turn search off.
- Blocking in the app: three dots next to a video → "Block this video"; on the watch page, "Block" → "Block entire channel", then enter the passcode or solve the on-screen sum.
- From your own YouTube account: channel page → three dots (on desktop, the About tab and the flag icon) → "Block channel for kids" → choose your child. This works when you're signed in to the linked parent account.
Blocking a channel doesn't stop reuploads of the same cartoons on other channels, so for young children approval mode is more reliable.
Browser extensions: an automatic filter
The Chrome and Firefox stores have filter extensions for desktop. They usually look for the letters «ы», «ъ», «э», «ё» in titles and automatically click "Not interested" or "Don't recommend channel". Limitations:
- they miss Russian videos with English or auto-translated titles;
- they only work in the browser, not in the phone or TV app;
- they get access to YouTube pages — install only from official stores, check reviews and permissions, and never enter your Google password into them.
What this means for Ukrainian-language creators
Every viewer who cleans Russian channels out of their feed looks for a replacement — Ukrainian-language videos on the same topics. If you run such a channel, it helps when new videos reach their first viewers faster: you can add starting views on the YouTube views page — from $0.95 per 1,000, no password needed. YouTube's rules target artificial activity, so treat this only as moderate support for good content. More tips in how to get into YouTube recommendations.
