How to turn off auto-dubbing on YouTube: the short answer
To remove auto-dubbing from a specific video, open the gear icon (Settings) in the player → Audio track and pick the language marked “original”. Viewers do not get a single “turn off dubbing everywhere” switch, but you can set preferred languages in your account settings so videos in those languages play in the original. Channel owners turn auto-dubbing on or off in YouTube Studio settings.
Why videos suddenly speak your language: in February 2026 YouTube rolled out AI dubbing to all channels and expanded it to 27 languages. For eligible creators it is on by default, and the player picks a track based on your account language. Such videos are labelled “auto-dubbed” in the description.
How to turn off auto-dubbing on phone, desktop and TV
Phone (Android and iPhone):
- open the video and tap the screen to show the controls;
- tap the gear (Settings) → Audio track;
- choose the track marked “original”.
Desktop: gear in the bottom right of the player → Audio track → original language.
TV: during playback, open the player settings menu and find Audio track. The exact menu depends on your TV model and app version.
The track choice applies to one video. To avoid switching every time, open your YouTube account settings (on desktop: profile picture → Settings → Playback and performance) and add every language you understand to your preferred languages. According to YouTube, videos in those languages will play in the original, while others will be dubbed where a dub exists. Menu names may vary slightly by app version.
How to turn auto-dubbing on or off on your own channel
For creators the feature matters more than for viewers: a video in Ukrainian or Russian gets an English track and can be recommended abroad.
- In the YouTube Studio app: profile picture → Settings → Content section → Automatic dubbing → turn on or off.
- Manual review: in the same menu choose Publish manually so dubs are not published automatically.
- Managing tracks (desktop only): Content → video → Languages → icon in the Audio column: preview, publish, unpublish or delete. A deleted dub cannot be restored.
- If the feature is not active, YouTube Help says you can enable it with the Enable button in Studio's advanced settings.
Automatic dubs cannot be edited. If a translation is off, check that the video's original language is set correctly: fixing it regenerates the tracks. Videos longer than 120 minutes, with little or very fast speech, music videos and videos with copyright claims are not dubbed.
Dubbing opens a new audience, but the algorithm still looks at early response first. If a new upload lacks an initial push, you can add first impressions with YouTube views — from $0.95 per 1,000, with retention, no password. Platform rules are against artificial activity, so order in moderation and only for strong videos.
Which languages YouTube auto-dubbing supports
- 27 languages in total (as of 2026), but translation directions are limited.
- Ukrainian and Russian → English only. A Ukrainian video gets an English track, but not German or Spanish.
- English → 20+ languages, including Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, German, Spanish, Hindi and Japanese. That is why English videos often play in Ukrainian for viewers in Ukraine.
- Expressive speech (a voice that keeps the creator's intonation) works in 8 languages: English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Ukrainian and Russian tracks use standard synthetic voice for now.
- Lip sync is still being tested and is not available to everyone.
The language list is expanding gradually, and some directions are marked as experimental in Studio.
How auto-dubbing helps you reach viewers abroad
- Speak clearly and one at a time. YouTube itself recommends avoiding overlapping voices and loud music under speech.
- Translate your title and description. Otherwise a foreign viewer will not click and will never hear the dub. We cover metadata in our YouTube SEO guide.
- Track the results. Analytics has an audio track filter that shows how many people watch the dubbed version.
- Check the language at upload. A wrong Video language field produces a wrong translation; useful upload settings are in our guide on how to upload a video to YouTube.
Once foreign viewers start arriving, the goal is to turn them into a lasting audience. If your channel is new and an empty counter puts people off, you can strengthen the base with YouTube subscribers with a 30-day guarantee — from $20 per 1,000, gradually and alongside regular uploads.
