Most YouTube views come not from search but from recommendations: the home page and the "Up next" panel beside other videos. The algorithm does not push videos as such — it looks for what each specific viewer will want to watch and be satisfied with. Here is how to get long videos into those recommendations; Shorts are covered separately in YouTube Shorts: how to get recommended.
What the algorithm cares about
- Thumbnail CTR — how often people click a video after seeing it in a feed.
- Average view duration and retention — how long they watch after clicking.
- Satisfaction — likes, post-watch surveys, playlist adds and "Not interested" clicks.
- Session continuation — whether the person keeps watching YouTube after your video.
Clickbait with high CTR and low retention loses: what matters is the chain "clicked — watched — was satisfied".
Steps 1–2: thumbnail, title and the first 30 seconds
- 1. The thumbnail and title work together. One idea, a large subject, minimal text, intrigue without deception. How to raise CTR is in YouTube thumbnails and titles.
- 2. The first 30 seconds confirm the promise. No long intros or greetings: show right away what the viewer will get. Details are in YouTube audience retention.
Steps 3–4: topic and session
- 3. Pick topics people already watch. Look at which competitor videos perform above their usual numbers and make a better version of your own. The "Research" tab in YouTube Studio analytics shows what your audience searches for.
- 4. Keep viewers on your channel. End screens, playlists, series and links to related videos extend the session, and in return the algorithm suggests your videos more often.
Steps 5–7: the first 48 hours and consistency
- 5. Publish when your audience is online. Active hours are shown in analytics. Your first viewers are subscribers, and their reaction tells the algorithm whether to widen distribution.
- 6. Bring in the first viewers. A Community post, a Shorts teaser linking to the full video, an announcement on other social networks and ads. Tip: a video with zero views in its first hours looks unappealing even to real viewers, so a starting number helps: YouTube views from $0.95 per 1000.
- 7. Publish consistently. A steady schedule teaches subscribers to come back and the algorithm to expect new videos from your channel.
Why a video does not get recommended
- CTR is lower than your usual videos — change the thumbnail or title.
- Retention drops sharply in the first seconds — the video does not match expectations.
- The topic is too far from what your audience watches.
- Age restrictions or community guideline violations — check the video's status in Studio. If reach dropped sharply, go through the checklist in why YouTube views dropped.
Start promoting
- Real viewers from your niche: video ads in Google Ads targeting people who watch similar channels — setup is in YouTube advertising. Satisfied viewers give the algorithm exactly the right signals.
- A starting number: views from $0.95 per 1000 or views with likes for $1.10 per 1000.
- Channel social proof: subscribers from $20 per 1000 with a 30 day refill.
Important: boosting alone will not get a video recommended — that takes clicks and watch time from real people. It removes the empty-video effect and is not suitable for monetized channels. All services are on the buy YouTube views, subscribers and likes page.
