You can view Instagram Stories anonymously only on public accounts and only through workarounds: airplane mode, a partial swipe, web viewers for public Stories or a second account. There is no official invisible mode, and nobody can see Stories from a private profile without following it. Below are 5 methods, their limits and risks.
Can you watch Instagram Stories anonymously
Every view made in the app is recorded: the author sees your username in the viewer list for 48 hours after posting. You can only avoid this if the app fails to send the view to the server or if you are not watching from your own account. All the methods below are unreliable and may stop working after an Instagram update.
How to view Stories anonymously: 5 ways
- Airplane mode. Open your feed and wait for the Story bubbles to load. Turn on airplane mode, watch the Story, then fully close Instagram (swipe it away from recent apps) before reconnecting. Limits: it only works for preloaded Stories, videos often do not load, and if you skip closing the app the view may register once you are back online.
- Partial swipe. Open the Story of the neighbouring account and slowly drag sideways without lifting your finger: you will see the first frame of the target Story. Let go and the view counts.
- Web viewers for public Stories. Sites where you type the username of a public account and see its Stories without logging in to Instagram. They only work with public profiles.
- A second account. Instagram lets you add several profiles to one app. The author will see the second username, not your main one.
- Highlights after 48 hours. If a Story is saved to Highlights, the author keeps the viewer list for only 48 hours after posting. After that your username will not appear, only the total view count.
If you post Stories yourself and do not want them to look empty, you can add views on our Instagram views page: it covers Story views, and Reels and video views start from $0.09 per 1,000. No password needed.
Can you view a private account's Stories anonymously
No. Stories from a private profile are visible only to approved followers. Any site or bot promising to show private Stories is either lying or trying to collect your data. The only honest way is to send a follow request.
Are anonymous Story viewer sites safe
A legitimate public Story viewer never asks you to log in. Safety rules:
- Never enter your Instagram username and password on third-party sites or apps — it is the number one way accounts get hijacked.
- Do not install anonymous viewer apps from unofficial sources or browser extensions with access to all sites.
- Use only HTTPS sites and ignore pop-up Download buttons.
- Remember that the site still sees your IP address and device, even if Instagram does not see you.
If you have already typed your password into a suspicious site, change it and turn on two-factor authentication in Accounts Center.
What Story authors see and how to check who viewed your Stories
Authors see the viewer list and the total view count for 48 hours. Professional accounts also get insights: reach, link taps, replies and exits. How to turn these numbers into growth is covered in how to run Instagram Stories, and why some Stories are shown more often than others is explained in how the Instagram algorithm works.
To help your Stories and posts reach people consistently, all growth tools are collected in our Instagram growth services section — followers, likes and views from $0.09 per 1,000, with no account access.
