To make a Telegram channel private, open the channel → tap its name → "Edit" (pencil) → "Channel Type" → "Private" and save. After that the @username address stops working, and people can join only through an invite link — a regular one, one that requires admin approval, or a paid subscription link in Telegram Stars.
How a public channel differs from a private one
- Public channels have a short t.me/name address, appear in search, and their posts can be read without subscribing.
- Private channels are available only via a t.me/+code link, don't appear in search, and links to their posts open only for subscribers.
- You can switch the type either way at any time — subscribers and posts stay.
Private channels are often used for clients, courses or VIP content. If an empty counter hurts trust at launch, you can build a basic audience on our Telegram subscribers page — Ukraine geo from $0.40 per 1,000, no password. A private channel will need an invite link without approval and without payment. Be realistic: such subscribers won't buy your product, and Telegram's rules are against artificial activity — order a small volume and only as a starting showcase.
How to make a Telegram channel private on your phone
Android:
- Open the channel and tap its name at the top.
- Tap the pencil icon in the top right corner.
- Choose "Channel Type" → "Private Channel".

How to make a channel private on a computer
- Telegram Desktop: channel → "⋮" → "Manage Channel" → "Channel Type" → "Private" → "Save".
- Web version: open the channel profile → pencil → "Channel Type" → "Private".
Important: the released @username can be taken by anyone. If the address is valuable, reserve it with another placeholder channel of yours, or scammers may use it.
How to set up invite links and join requests
After switching to private, open "Edit" → "Invite Links" → "Create a New Link". For each link you can set:
- Admin approval — a person submits a request and you accept or decline it.
- Usage limit — how many people can join via the link (usually unavailable when approval is on).
- Expiry date — after it, the link stops working.
- Name — handy for tracking where people came from: "Instagram", "Newsletter", "Blogger ad".
You can revoke any link if it leaks publicly.
How to set up paid access with Telegram Stars
In a private channel, when creating an invite link you can enable a paid subscription and set a price in Stars. Key points:
- the subscription lasts 30 days and renews automatically;
- after payment the person joins immediately, without approval;
- Stars go to the channel balance; the maximum price is set by Telegram and may change.
How to choose a price and what to publish in a paid channel is covered in paid subscription to a Telegram channel, and the currency itself in what Telegram Stars are.
What a private channel loses
- Search. A private channel can't be found through Telegram search or Google — see how to get into Telegram search.
- Similar channels. According to admins' observations, recommendations feature public channels.
- Virality. A forwarded post won't bring a new reader into the channel without an invite link.
- Personal channel in your profile. Only a public channel can be added to a profile.
A practical setup is two channels: a public one to attract an audience and a private one for clients or paid content, with its link pinned in the public channel.
