Creating a Telegram channel costs nothing: it is a free app feature, and money goes only into content and promotion. The price of a ready-made channel depends not on the subscriber count but on live reach, topic and income: according to guide authors, a profitable channel sells for roughly 5–8 months of income, and channels of the same size in different niches can differ in price several times over.
How much it costs to create a Telegram channel
The channel itself takes a minute to create and is free; Premium isn't required (step by step in how to create a Telegram channel from scratch). Real costs come later:
- branding — avatar, description, navigation post (you can do it yourself);
- content — your time or a paid author;
- promotion — ads in other channels, Telegram Ads, cross-promotion.
Live reach is ultimately what determines a channel's value. At launch, while the channel is empty, you can add a first base on our Telegram subscribers page (Ukraine geo from $0.40 per 1,000) and give new posts starting views from $0.12 per 1,000 — no password. To be honest, this helps with first impressions but doesn't replace a real audience. Telegram's rules are against artificial activity, and inflating numbers before a sale is deceiving the buyer — something statistics expose easily.
What determines the price of a ready-made channel
- Reach and ERR. A 10,000-subscriber channel with high reach can be worth more than a 50,000 one with a dead base.
- Topic. Finance, business and IT cost noticeably more than humor and entertainment because ads there are pricier.
- Audience geo and language — they define who buys ads and at what rate.
- Age and growth history. Steady growth without sharp spikes is valued higher.
- Current income — ads, regular advertisers, Stars.
- Base quality. If the buyer spots fake subscribers, the price drops several times or the deal falls through.
How a channel is valued: income multiple and price per subscriber
There is no official price list; the market uses two approaches:
- By income. A profitable channel is valued at several months of income: a 2026 guide on DTF cites 5–8 months, while a 2024 breakdown on vc.ru warns that a normal payback period is a year or more, and promises of quick payback are a red flag.
- By audience. A channel without income is valued as "price per subscriber in the niche × subscribers", adjusted for reach. According to these guides, channels of equal size in business and entertainment niches can differ in price several times, and reach below 15% of subscribers is a reason not to buy.
These are guide authors' estimates, not a standard. How to calculate channel income is covered in how much Telegram channels earn.
Where Telegram channels are bought and sold
- specialized channel exchanges and marketplaces — often with an escrow guarantor;
- niche Telegram chats and affiliate-marketing forums;
- direct deals between admins in the same niche.
Before buying, check the channel in TGStat and Telemetr: subscriber dynamics, view consistency, mentions. Ask for screenshots of built-in statistics with view sources, or temporary admin access without management rights — what a fake base looks like is described in bots in a Telegram channel. Note that premium @usernames are sold separately on Fragment and also affect the price.
How to transfer channel ownership
Telegram has a built-in channel transfer — no need to hand over a password or phone number:
- the seller must have two-step verification enabled for at least 7 days, and, according to guides, an active session on the device for more than 24 hours;
- the seller makes the buyer an admin: "Edit" → "Administrators" → "Add Admin";
- in the new admin's rights, they enable "Add New Admins" — a button to transfer channel ownership appears;
- they confirm with the two-step verification password.
After the transfer, the buyer should review the admin list and remove anyone unnecessary, including the previous owner if they remain an admin. Never buy a channel "together with the account": the previous owner can recover access through the phone number.
What risks come with buying a channel
- Fake base. You can't sell ads in such a channel, and mass bot activity risks restrictions from Telegram.
- Scammers. They take prepayment and disappear or resell stolen channels. Use a guarantor and pay in stages.
- Audience churn. After a change of author and style, some readers leave.
- Past violations and unfulfilled obligations to advertisers.
