How to verify your phone number on YouTube: the short answer
Open YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and click Verify phone number (or go to youtube.com/verify). Choose your country, enter your number, get a code by text or voice call and enter it. This unlocks videos longer than 15 minutes, custom thumbnails and live streaming from a computer.
One phone number can be used to verify at most two channels per year. If you run more channels, you will need another number.
Which features account verification unlocks
In 2026 YouTube splits features into three levels. Many people still call everything that appears after phone verification “advanced features”, but according to YouTube Help the split looks like this:
- Standard — available right after you create a channel, if you have no active strikes: uploading videos and Shorts, playlists, posts.
- Intermediate — after phone verification: videos over 15 minutes, custom thumbnails, live streaming from a computer, creating a podcast.
- Advanced — based on channel history or after video or ID verification: Content ID appeals, embedding live streams, applying for monetization, clickable links in descriptions, pinning comments, chapters, A/B tests, additional channels and multi-language features.
You can see what is already unlocked under Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility, where available items show Enabled. Some features have daily limits.
Custom thumbnails are the biggest growth win from verification: they drive CTR, as we explain in our guide to YouTube thumbnails and titles. But even a great thumbnail needs first impressions. If a new video is stuck at zero, you can add starter YouTube views from $0.95 per 1,000, with retention and no password. Platform rules are against artificial activity, so order in moderation.
Step by step: verifying your phone number
- Sign in to YouTube on a computer with the right channel's account (if you have several channels, switch to the one you need).
- Open youtube.com/verify or Feature eligibility in YouTube Studio.
- Choose your country and how to receive the code: text message or voice call.
- Enter the number in international format and click Get code.
- Enter the 6-digit code and confirm.
You can also verify from the YouTube Studio app: YouTube prompts you when you try to use a locked feature, such as uploading a custom thumbnail. The interface and menu names may vary slightly by version.
What to do if the verification code does not arrive
- Wait a couple of minutes and request a new code. It should arrive instantly, but texts are sometimes delayed — especially in crowded places or with a weak signal.
- Switch to a voice call instead of a text — this is the first tip in YouTube Help.
- Check the number format: the right country and code (+380 for Ukraine), no extra leading zero.
- Try a number from another carrier. Some carriers do not deliver Google texts and calls.
- The “maximum number of accounts” error means the two-channels-per-year limit has been reached — you need a different number.
- Avoid “virtual SMS number” services: you will not be able to recover access later, and such numbers have often already hit the limit.
How to get advanced access: video, ID or channel history
The top level first requires a verified phone, and then there are three routes:
- Channel history. YouTube may grant access automatically if the channel has been active for a while and follows the guidelines. You do not need to do anything.
- Video verification. A short video of your face recorded on your phone — a quick option for new channels.
- ID. A photo of a valid government ID.
The options appear in Feature eligibility next to the advanced level. You can lose advanced access for Community Guidelines violations. Note that this is not the same as the check mark next to a channel name — that badge is only available from 100,000 subscribers.
How to use the unlocked features for growth
- Custom thumbnails — keep a consistent style and large text, and once you have advanced access, run A/B tests on several versions.
- Long videos — more watch time, which means a faster path to monetization thresholds.
- Live streams — real-time contact with your audience; we explain how to go live from a computer, phone or OBS in our guide on how to start a YouTube stream.
On early streams and videos, an empty reaction counter puts viewers off. YouTube likes from $1 per 1,000 help support social proof — no password, just a video link, in sensible volumes.
