Short answer: for 1000 views of a long video a creator usually earns $1 to $10, and for 1000 Shorts views a few cents. The amount depends on the niche, viewer country and format. And an important update: from February 1, 2027 the entry threshold for ad monetization doubles for new channels. Here is how income is calculated and how to qualify under the current terms.
CPM and RPM: the difference
- CPM — what advertisers pay per 1000 ad impressions on your videos.
- RPM — what you actually earn per 1000 views after YouTube's share, counting views without ads. That is why RPM is almost always lower than CPM.
- Creator share: 55% of ad revenue on long videos, and 45% of the amount YouTube allocates to the channel from the overall Shorts pool.
Your RPM is shown in YouTube Studio under "Revenue" once monetization is enabled.
How much they pay: benchmarks
- Long videos: according to public creator data, RPM most often falls in the $1–10 range, averaging about $3–4.
- Shorts: usually $0.03–0.07 per 1000 views, higher in finance and tech with a US audience.
- Niche: finance, business, tech and education pay several times more than entertainment and gaming.
- Viewer country: audiences from the US, UK and Germany are more valuable; audiences from Ukraine and other Eastern European countries usually less so.
Example: 100,000 long-form views at a $2 RPM is about $200. One million Shorts views at a $0.05 RPM is about $50. That is why Shorts are mostly used to attract subscribers, while long videos make the money. More on Shorts is in YouTube Shorts monetization.
How to join the Partner Program
- First tier (memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, shopping): 500 subscribers, 3 uploads in 90 days and 3000 watch hours in a year or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days.
- Second tier (ad and YouTube Premium revenue): 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
- Watch hours and Shorts views do not combine: you need to meet one of the two paths.
After you apply, the channel goes through a manual review: YouTube checks originality and policy compliance. Artificial views and subscribers do not count and can hurt the review. More in YouTube Partner Program requirements.
What changes on February 1, 2027
In August 2026 YouTube announced that from February 1, 2027 new channels will need 8000 watch hours instead of 4000 or 20 million Shorts views instead of 10 million to earn ad revenue. According to industry media, the 500-subscriber first tier stays the same. If your channel is close to the current threshold, now is the time to speed up and apply before February. Check the exact terms for your channel in YouTube Help.
How to earn more per 1000 views
- Make videos of 8+ minutes: they allow mid-roll ads.
- Choose topics advertisers care about: reviews, education, money, tech.
- Use Shorts as a funnel: short videos bring subscribers, long ones make money.
- Add other income streams: channel memberships, brand integrations, affiliate links in the description.
- Work on retention: the longer people watch, the more ad impressions and watch hours toward the threshold. Techniques are in YouTube audience retention.
Start promoting
To build an audience before the new thresholds, combine content with promotion:
- Real viewers and subscribers: video ads in Google Ads — step by step in YouTube advertising. Ad viewers subscribe and then watch new videos organically.
- A start for a new video: YouTube views from $0.95 per 1000 so the video does not sit at zero.
- Trust in a new channel: subscribers from $20 per 1000 with a 30 day refill.
To be honest: boosted views and subscribers do not count toward monetization thresholds and do not earn ad revenue, and it is better not to use them on a monetized channel. They serve as social proof at the start, while real viewers make the money. All services are on the buy YouTube views, subscribers and likes page.
