TikTok LIVE is one of the fastest ways to get closer to your audience, gain followers and earn from gifts. But not everyone has the LIVE button, and a first stream often plays to an empty room. Here are the requirements, the step-by-step launch and how to get viewers from the first minute.
How many followers you need to go live
- 1000 followers is the standard threshold in most countries. TikTok sometimes unlocks the feature earlier in tests, but do not count on it.
- Age. You can usually host a stream from 16–18 depending on the country, and receive gifts only from 18.
- A clean account history. After community guideline violations, LIVE access can be temporarily restricted.
If 1000 is still far away, you can join other creators' streams as a guest: the host invites you and their audience sees you. To reach the threshold faster, follow the plan in how to get your first 1000 TikTok followers. Tip: the last few hundred followers to the threshold can be covered with followers from $3 per 1000.
How to go live from your phone
- Open TikTok and tap "+" at the bottom of the screen.
- Swipe through the camera modes to LIVE.
- Add a cover and a title that says why to join: "Reviewing your profiles", "Answering questions about…".
- Pick a stream topic, set the comment filter and tap "Go LIVE".
For streaming from a computer there is TikTok LIVE Studio and stream keys for OBS, but not every account gets access. A phone is enough for your first streams.
What to do if the LIVE button is missing
- Check your follower count and the date of birth in your profile.
- Update the app, log out and log back in.
- Open "Account status" in settings and check for restrictions.
- If everything is fine, wait a few days: the feature sometimes appears with a delay after you reach the threshold.
How to prepare a stream people will join
- An announcement. A day before, post a video with the date and topic or create a LIVE event so followers get a reminder.
- A plan. 3–5 blocks for 30–60 minutes: greeting, main topic, Q&A, a giveaway or challenge.
- Light and sound. A ring light, a tripod and a quiet room matter more than an expensive camera.
- Timing. Pick hours when your audience is active; they are shown in your profile analytics.
- Joint streams and PK battles. Invite other creators: their viewers come to you.
Why the first minutes of a stream matter
TikTok shows streams in the For You feed and the LIVE tab, and a stream with viewers and an active chat gets more impressions. People quickly scroll past an empty stream. So in the first minutes, greet viewers by name, ask questions in chat and ask people to like the stream.
Start promoting
- Viewers at the start of a stream: the catalogue has live stream views with PK battle points for 15 minutes to 6 hours, from $0.82 per 1000 for a 15-minute stream. Pick the option that matches your stream length on the buy TikTok followers, likes and views page.
- LIVE access: TikTok followers from $3 per 1000 if you are a little short of the threshold.
- An announcement with reach: views from $0.14 per 1000 on the announcement video, or Promote so more people learn about the stream (see TikTok advertising in Ukraine).
Starter viewers remove the empty-room effect, but the topic and your delivery are what keep a live audience. How to earn from streams and other formats is covered in how much TikTok pays per 1000 views.
