Comments in a Telegram channel are enabled through a discussion group: open the channel → Edit (pencil) → Discussion → Add Group, then pick an existing group or create a new one. Once linked, a comment button appears under posts and each post is automatically copied into the group. There is no separate comments toggle in the channel itself — without a discussion group, comments don't work.
How to enable channel comments on your phone
- Open the channel and tap its name at the top.
- Tap Edit on iPhone or the pencil icon on Android.
- Choose Discussion → Add Group.
- Create a new group or pick one where you are an admin.
- Confirm the link.
As a rule, the button appears on posts published after the group is linked. An empty thread rarely prompts the first reply, so you can add early activity on the Telegram promotion page: comments from CIS accounts cost $4 per 1000, only the post link is needed and no password. Keep the volume modest — a few relevant replies look more natural than dozens of identical ones.
How to enable comments on desktop
In Telegram Desktop, open the channel → ⋮ → Manage Channel → Discussion and select or create a group. The web version is similar: channel profile → Edit → Discussion. Whichever device you use, the link is saved for the whole channel, so you only need to do it once.
How to set up comment moderation
All rules are set in the discussion group, not the channel:
- Permissions — block links, media or stickers if spam is a problem.
- Slow mode — limits how often one person can post.
- Only members can send messages — commenters must join the group and, with join requests on, wait for approval.
- Administrators — appoint moderators who can delete messages and ban users.
It also helps to pin a short list of comment rules in the group, so moderators have something clear to point to when they remove a message.
How to protect comments from spam
- Groups with 200+ members have built-in Aggressive Anti-Spam: group → Administrators → Aggressive Anti-Spam. Telegram removes suspicious messages itself, and you can review mistakes in the recent actions log.
- Moderation bots filter links, stop words and newcomers — see our review of bots for a Telegram channel.
- Delete spam right away: ad messages under posts drive readers off.
Why didn't comments appear in my Telegram channel?
- The group isn't linked or was unlinked — check the Discussion section.
- The post was published before the group was linked.
- The post's copy in the group was deleted — its comments disappear. In practice, this is also how admins turn off comments on a single post.
- The reader is on an outdated app version.
How comments help a channel grow
Discussion under posts turns a channel into a community: people come back to reply, and the author gets ideas for new posts. How engagement ties into reach is covered in how the Telegram algorithm works, and day-to-day audience work in how to run a Telegram channel.
People comment where posts get seen: you can support the reach of new posts on the Telegram views page — from $0.014 per 1000 on recent posts.
