How TikTok decides who sees your video
TikTok first shows a new video to a small group of viewers and watches how they react. If people watch it to the end, rewatch, save, comment and send it to friends, the video goes to the next, larger group, and so on in rounds. According to TikTok's own description, recommendations are shaped by user actions, video information (caption, sound, hashtags) and account and device settings. So getting into recommendations means passing several of these checks in a row, and the first one matters most.
8 steps that raise your chances
- 1. Hook in the first 1-3 seconds. Say or show the point immediately, with no intro or greeting. Hook formulas are in 15 formulas for the first seconds.
- 2. Make the video shorter than you want to. Completion beats length: a short video watched to the end is better than a long one dropped halfway.
- 3. Stick to one topic. If an account posts about everything, TikTok struggles to decide who to show it to. Pick a niche and a set of formats.
- 4. Write captions with words people search for. TikTok works as a search engine too: keywords in the caption and on screen help you appear in search. More in TikTok SEO.
- 5. Use 3-5 precise hashtags. One broad one and a few niche ones, not dozens of random ones.
- 6. Use a current sound where it fits. A trending sound helps when it suits the video and hurts when it is stuck on for the sound alone. See what is trending in November trends.
- 7. Give people a reason to save and reply. A checklist, a recipe, a question at the end: saves and comments show the video is useful.
- 8. Post regularly and read the analytics. In TikTok Studio, look at watch time and where viewers come from, and repeat what worked. Timing is covered in the best time to post.
If a video is stuck
Did a video stop at a few hundred views? Check in order:
- retention: where viewers leave, and at which second;
- whether the video breaks community rules or the account has been removed from recommendations: how to check is in the article on shadowban;
- whether views dropped across the whole account at once: causes are in why TikTok views dropped;
- whether the caption matches the topic of the video.
If the weak spots are fixed and the video is strong, it may simply lack real viewers at the start, and this is where ads help.
Start promotion: ads and services
A strong video with a sluggish start can be shown to more people through ads; boosting services only dress up the counter.
- TikTok ads. The Promote button in the app or Spark Ads in the ads manager show the video to a real audience you configure. How to launch and what it costs is in TikTok ads in Ukraine.
- Starting numbers. TikTok views from $0.14 per 1000, including 60% retention views and saves, keep a video from looking empty in the first hours, but they don't replace real viewers' reactions. Likes start at $0.40 per 1000 and followers at $3 per 1000.
Boosting does not guarantee recommendations and does not replace a strong video: it changes the counter, while TikTok evaluates how people react and can remove artificial activity and limit reach. If you do order, start with a small amount and keep in mind that drops are possible. All TikTok services are in the catalogue.
