Since August 2025, Instagram only lets public accounts with 1,000 or more followers start a live video. If there is no Live option on your Instagram, that is almost always the reason: not enough followers or a private profile. Less often the cause is being under 16, account restrictions for violations or an outdated app version.
Why is there no Live option on Instagram: 6 reasons
- Fewer than 1,000 followers. When you try to go live, Instagram shows a notice that only public accounts with 1,000+ followers can create live videos.
- A private profile. Private accounts are restricted too, even with enough followers.
- Under 16. Since April 2025, teens under 16 cannot go live without parental permission.
- Account restrictions. Live access can be removed for Community Guidelines violations. Check Settings → Account Status.
- An old app version or a glitch. Update Instagram in the App Store or Google Play, log out and back in, and clear the cache (Android).
- Staged rollout. The interface and rules can differ by region and app version.
The 1,000-follower requirement: what changed in 2025
Until summer 2025 any account could go live. In early August 2025 users started seeing the new restriction, and Meta confirmed it to Engadget, saying the goal was to "improve the overall experience for creators" and stream quality. As of November 2026 the threshold remains unchanged. TikTok has long had a similar rule.
If you are a few hundred short, you can close the gap with real Instagram followers — from $10 per 1,000, with Ukraine geo and a 30-day guarantee plan available. All we need is your profile link, no password. Keep in mind that Instagram's rules are aimed against artificial activity, so order in moderation and alongside your regular posts. Free growth methods are collected in how to get more Instagram followers.
How to go live on Instagram from your phone

- Scroll the modes at the bottom to Live.
- Choose the audience if the option is available and add a title — it makes the stream easier to find.

- Before ending, turn on saving to your archive if you want to share the recording later.
How to go live on Instagram from a computer
Streaming through OBS or StreamYard requires a professional account (creator or business) and the same 1,000 followers. On instagram.com click Create → Live video, copy the server URL and stream key into your software and start the stream. Use a vertical 9:16 format, otherwise viewers on phones will see black bars. Never share your stream key with anyone.
What to do while you have fewer than 1,000 followers
- Make your profile public and switch to a professional account so you can see insights and understand what grows your audience.
- Post Reels and collab posts — they bring new people fastest.
- Use a broadcast channel to talk to your audience — see Instagram Broadcast Channels.
- Prepare your first live in advance: a Stories announcement, topic and time. How to gather viewers once Live is unlocked is covered in our Instagram Live viewers guide.
So that your first live does not play to an empty room, warm up the account beforehand: views, likes and other profile services are collected on the Instagram promotion page.
