To reset your Instagram recommendations, go to your profile → ☰ menu → Settings and activity → Content preferences → Reset suggested content. The reset clears recommendations in Feed, Reels and Explore but doesn't touch who you follow or your posts. To fine-tune your feed without a full reset, use Your Algorithm, where you can add and remove topics.
How to reset Instagram recommendations step by step
- Open your profile and tap ☰ in the top right corner.
- Choose Settings and activity, scroll to What you see and open Content preferences.
- Tap Reset suggested content and read the explanation.
- On the next screen Instagram offers to unfollow some accounts — this is optional.
- Confirm by tapping Reset suggested content again.
The reset is available in the iPhone and Android apps. Menu labels can shift between app versions, so if you can't find the button, use the search bar at the top of Settings.
What gets deleted after a reset and what stays
Recommendations in Feed, Reels and Explore are cleared. Your followers and following, posts and Highlights, saved items, DMs and Close Friends stay as they are; ads are managed separately. According to Instagram's Help Center, the reset can't be undone: the algorithm relearns from your new views, likes and saves. Expect a more random feed for the first few days — that's normal.
There's a flip side for creators: a viewer who reset their recommendations won't see your Reels based on old signals anymore. A new video needs a quick early response, and you can add first views on the Instagram Reels views page — from $0.09 per 1,000, no password required. Instagram's rules discourage artificial activity, so treat this as moderate support for a good video, not a substitute for content.
What is Your Algorithm and where to find it
Your Algorithm shows the topics Instagram thinks you're interested in and lets you edit them. Timeline: it appeared in Reels in December 2025, reached all English-speaking users in January 2026, was added to Explore in April and to the main Feed in June.
- Open Reels or Explore and tap the icon in the top right corner (two lines with hearts).
- Review the list of topics and remove the ones you don't want.
- Add topics you'd like to see more of. Changes apply immediately.
Note: according to Instagram and industry outlets, the feature has rolled out to English-language users. If you use the app in another language, the icon may be missing — update the app and use the other controls below.
Other ways to tune your feed without a full reset
- Not interested — the three dots on a suggested post or Reel. It works one post at a time; the opposite signal is Interested.
- Sensitive content control — in Content preferences adults choose Less, Standard or More. It only applies to accounts you don't follow.
- Hidden words — hide suggestions with specific words in captions and hashtags; takes effect within 24 hours.
- Snooze suggested posts — removes them from your home feed for 30 days, but doesn't affect Reels or Explore.

What resets and Your Algorithm mean for creators
Viewers now pick topics explicitly, so there are fewer random “show it to everyone” impressions. Accounts with a clear focus win:
- stick to one niche and 2–3 related topics instead of everything at once;
- name your topic in captions, on-screen text and your profile Name field;
- watch retention and shares — the system leans on them most.
If your reach has already dropped, start with the checklist in why Instagram reach drops. And so a new post doesn't look empty in its first hours, you can add a few Instagram likes — from $0.30 per 1,000.
